What is Ear Wax?
Ear Wax is a mix of oil and sweat with some properties, like being antibacterial and antifungal. It helps to repel water, keeping the skin in our ears from getting dry and itchy, and even traps dust and germs, stopping them from reaching the eardrum.
The skin in our ear canal grows outward in a spiral pattern, constantly renewing itself. It carries away dead skin cells as it moves outward. With our natural jaw movements from talking and chewing, this process keeps going smoothly, and the wax eventually falls out or washes away in the shower.
While earwax is completely normal and important for ear health, sometimes it can build up and form a plug.
Symptoms associated with wax impaction can include but are not limited to:
- Hearing loss
- Tinnitus
- Feeling of fullness
- Itching
- Pain
- Discharge
- Odour
- Cough
